Jude Mason - erotic romance author

Jude: “I’ve always enjoyed the more sensual part of any story. Even when I was young, although I read science fiction and detective novels, I would feel that extra thrill when I got to the naughty bits. I guess the very best part is romance can be any genre. I mean you can have romantic westerns or historicals, there’s just such an enormous range of things you can write about.”

 

Jude: “I remember so well being a new writer online. I didn’t have a clue how to go about being published. I think persistence is a good thing. Practicing the craft is essential, if you don’t do it, you lose it. A really good idea is to find a group or someone who can point you in the right direction or answer your questions.

 

“One thing I’ve been told by publishers over the years that’s huge. When you are ready to submit that wonderful piece of work, read the guidelines before you send. One publisher told me that as many as 50% of all the books he had subbed to him were deleted unread. That was a big shock to me. Apparently, some authors seem to think that any publisher will publish all genres. Not so, and a very big mistake to think so. Many publish one or two genres, so find out. Also, make sure you send exactly what they want in the format they want it in.”

 

Jude: “Oh now that’s a fine question. At the moment, I’m leaning towards m/m romance and erotica, with a touch of paranormal. I adore getting under the skin of a couple of hunky men and exploring that side of sensuality. I tend to like men who are bisexual so there’s always the chance some very lucky woman might be joining in. I will say that readers won’t find anything too vanilla coming from me any time soon. If you like your reading a little kinky or mixed genre, I’ll be there.”

 

Jude: “At the moment, I’m working with Jamie Hill on a paranormal m/m series that we’ve tentatively called ‘Kindred Spirits’. It centers around an inn on the west coast of either Canada or the US, we haven’t specified that yet and may not. Our lead character has decided to quit the rat race and buy himself an inn, which also happens to have a few spirits running around. The handyman, who is a hunk and a half, soon finds his way into the new owner’s heart. Together, they will entertain a variety of guests, solve the issues of some of the spirits living at the inn and get into some trouble together. So far, we haven’t decided exactly how many books there will be in this series, but there will be at least three. More if the readers want them. I think we could do quite a few with this premise.”

 

Jude: “I’ve worked with a couple of authors and sometimes it works and other times it sucks. Right now, I’m working with Jamie Hill and it’s been awesome. We both worry about our friendship being hurt, but we’re so much alike that I just can’t see it happening. We’ve talked a lot and promised each other that if there was any pressure or any chance of that happening, we’d drop the writing together. But, so far, it’s been awesome and we’re now on our third series. We’re both perfectionists, to some degree, and we write at about the same speed… okay she’s faster, but it’s really been great and I hope to do it for a long time yet.”

 

Jude: “I adore this question, and it’s incredibly difficult to explain to a non-writer. I can be completely into something else, cooking, walking the dog…okay, I don’t really have a dog, but go with me here…gardening, shopping, and suddenly I’ll get a flash. Sometimes it’s the bare bones of an idea, but more often, I’ll get the entire story in that flash. Yes, it’s condensed and needs the details filled in, but the rough draft is there. The characters, what they look like, where they’ve been—everything. I just have to write it.

 

“I’ve had nightmares about what my life would be without those flashes. Truly a terrifying thought because I’ve always had them. I mean, what would my life be without all those voices whispering/yelling in my ear?”
