Vodka is the standby drink of choice. Its a classic option like blue jeans. Where to go though when your in a mood for a good vodka? Honestly any upscale bar will have a good vodka because its so universally accepted in many cultures. Yet the Russian's and Polish are the undisputed kings of Vodka. So here's a few spots to head to when you just have that insatiable taste for exqusite vodka.
Russian Vodka Room (265 W. 52nd St., between 8th and Broadway): Who's going to better Vodka than the originators and masters of the drink? Want to try a vodka try 60 different varieties, most to all of of them homemade for that extra fire in your chest. I don't think I have to tell you with that many flavors you're bound to try one you like, provided you last that long. Thankfully it closes by midnight Sun-Thurs but stays open to 4am during the weekend.
This place has no windows and is dim. Dah it just adds to that mysterious tough Cold War Russian mystique comrade.
Russian Samovar (256 W. 52nd St. between 8th and Broadway): Another Great choice actually across the street from Vodka room. Nightly music via the baby grand. You won't much notice it with over a dozen flavored vodka's (herb and fruit varieties) on the menu. What else goes great with good vodka, caviar!! The Russian food here is authentic and very good. Hey it has some true weight in the Russian community, Baryshnikov is a co-owner. What Russian backs half-*ss vodka and bad caviar?! It's been a staple in the theatre district for years for a reason my guess is the cuisine, spirits and well spirit of the place. Since it is the theater district it closes at midnight usually.
A walk down Brighton Beach Boardwalk in summer: Nope, don't need a specific place (Though Tatiana's was fantastic until it burnt down I here. Have to confirm myself) Just take the Q train anytime or B during the week to Brighton Beach. Get out and start walking toward the water. You are in the heart of the largest Russian ex-pat community.
Just walk down from the train and check out a restaurant or two. The best ones are on the beach themselves which you can't beat with great weather and a look out on the water. In the summer the restaurants will be full and the bar scene respectable. Most people are at least bilingual so if you don't bring a friend you still can find decent conversation although I'd say bring a sidekick for added fun. I'm quite sure that you will find all the variations of vodka (including several name brands you haven't heard of) and great food (especially the tartare's) that you can want.
Buy a bottle of vodka in Greenpoint and take your party home: Greenpoint has started to become a trendy scene. However if you just go into any alcohol store next to some place that sells great salami then they're liable to sell you great vodka. For cheap!! I'm talking great bottles for $15.
