Throughout the past 13 years of parenting my special needs son, I have found that these books have made the journey more rewarding and less painful. I hope that other people appreciate them as well. (Note: The books are in no particular order.)

The Elephant in the Playroom: Ordinary Parents Write Intimately and Honestly About the Extraordinary Highs and Heartbreaking Lows of Raising Kids with Special Needs This is an excellent compilation of stories from parents on the frontlines of special needs parenting -- heartbreaking, endearing, and informative stories all in one book.

It Takes Two To Talk: A Parent's Guide to Helping Children Communicate This book completely changed they way I communicated with my son and I believe it helped my next two children to speak earlier and more effectively.

Straight Talk about Psychiatric Medications for Kids, Third Edition This book was recommended to me by my son's psychiatrist, and I have found it to be an excellent resource for information about psychiatric medications.

Parenting Children With Health Issues: Essential Tools, Tips, and Tactics for Raising Kids With Chronic Illness, Medical Conditions, and Special Healthcare Needs I have heard Dr. Cline speak and he presents a logical, well-thought-out set of strategies for parenting special needs children.

Inside Out Michelle Garcia Winner is the go-to source for everything "social thinking". I've found this book to be the best value for what it contains.

The Complete IEP Guide: How to Advocate for Your Special Ed Child If you've got a special needs child, chances are you'll be meeting with people from your school district in order to formulate an IEP or 504 plan. This book is a terrific resource for important information you need to know before you attend those meetings.

Raising Your Spirited Child Rev Ed: A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, and Energetic This book changed my life when my son was little. I kept wondering what was wrong with him and I was so surprised and gratified to find out that there were other parents dealing with kids like him!

More Than a Mom: Living a Full And Balanced Life When Your Child Has Special Needs (Mom's Choice Awards Recipient) When you're raising a special child, it's easy to get yourself lost in the shuffle. This book offers sound advice on maintaining relationships, taking time for yourself, and other important things you need to do while you travel this road.

Schuyler's Monster: A Father's Journey with His Wordless Daughter Rob Rummel-Hudson's book is, at its core, the story of a father's journey to discover to reason for his daughter's inability to speak. But more importantly, it's the story of two parents learning to advocate for their daughter and get her what she needs, whatever it takes. I highly recommend this book.

Rainbow of Hope: A Guide for the Special Needs Child This book is very hard to find now, but it was one of the first books I ever read about raising a special needs child, and it really changed my life. It helped me to realize that there is much to hope for and much to strive towards when raising these special kids.

I hope this list helps other parents out there who are looking for some guidance.
