Farrah Fawcett: Pay your respects on Go Skateboarding Day in NYC
Farrah Fawcett passed away Thursday morning, June 25th, at age 62, after a three-year battle with cancer. I've always said that when I kick the bucket, I'll want people to spend a lot of time remembering the way I lived, so it's with great pleasure that I let you guys in on National Go Skateboarding Day, which, alas, happened last weekend all over the nation, but, here in rain-sodden New York City, isn't happening until this weekend, Saturday, June 27th, at 1PM.
This is a holiday unlike any other. Traditionally (and when it's not raining), every year since 2003, participants all over the world drag out their skateboards on June 21st, just to remind themselves of the inherent joy and freedom of skateboarding.
I can only speak from the experience of having tried the sport so many times that my knees buckle from the sheer remembrance of that slippy , slippy board under my feet. But just look at Farrah doing it, and how she exhilirated (and yes, okay, cool) she looks doing it. She looks a little surprised (OMG, I'm doing it), a little unsteady, but mostly like she's having a lot of fun.
If you live in Brooklyn, meet at noon at Homage Skateshop (151 Smith Street, just off the F line at Bergen Street) for a skateboarding trip across the Brooklyn Bridge to the meeting point in Manhattan at Pike and Monroe Streets. Map is below. And yes, there's a skate park there. If you live in Manhattan, or are taking the subway, the festivities, which include demonstrations and giveaways, start at 1PM.
Live it up. Have fun. And look good while doing it, just like Farrah did, channeling the point of skateboarding itself.
