Forget the cabinet. Puppy? What puppy? The most important decision the Obamas are making right now is what they are going to wear to the inaugural balls.
OK, so the cabinet might be a hair more important. But, an inaugural ball gown is history. It will be displayed for years and years to come in Smithsonian glory. Before it makes it to the display cases it will be skewered by every fashion critic and blogger.
With this in mind, it is exciting to learn that one of the Obamas has chosen their fashion for inauguration night. Unfortunately, it is the infinitely less exciting choice of Barack Obama, Michelle hasn't yet made her decision.
Number 44 has selected an old stand-by to supply his threads for the big occasion. He's going with Chicago suit-maker Hart Schaffner Marx -- a union shop. The President-elect evidently practices what he preaches.
HSM has been fitting Obama for suits throughout the campaign. So, his decision was easy.
To see all of the events happening on the evening of January 20, check out the D.C. Tourism Examiner's coverage of the Barack Obama Inauguration. Ben's got his finger on the pulse and will make sure you can get a glance at Obama's tux. Check out his coverage here.
Interestingly, the inaugural tuxedo will be Obama's first purchase of a tux in 15 years. I suspect Michelle Obama can't say this is her first gown purchased in as long... Boys have it so easy.
While we are on the topic of Michelle, the race is on to design her threads for the big night. She is -- in all likelihood -- going to choose an American designer (major faux pas if she doesn't...) but that's all we know about her decision. We do, however, know all of the designers clamoring for a chance to get their dress into the Smithsonian.
People Magazine has some of the potential designers here. Women's Wear Daily asked designers for their sketches and got a few. They're even sketching for Sasha and Malia! Check out the pictures here. Click through all 40 pictures... it's worth the window shopping.
Mrs. Obama is quickly getting her first taste of First Ladydom. During the campaign she shopped for clothes off-the-rack and even mail ordered from places like J. Crew. How princess-like to be fought over by posh fashion-types to design for you... how delightful.
It's also ridiculously overwhelming. Who would you choose?
