The ratings powerhouse "American Idol" won't be getting rid of any judges this season, but it will be shaking things up a bit.
Is Paula Abdul a master manipulator? It would appear so. We told you last week how Paula was making the circuit touting the new season, her jewelry line on HSN and countless other projects. While on the tour, Abdul told Barbara Walters and David Letterman that she was unhappy with the way producers handled the audition of alleged stalker/fan Paula Goodspeed who this summer apparently committed suicide in front of Abdul's L.A. residence.
We, like a lot of people, thought for sure this was a sign of the beginning of the end for dear Miss Abdul. You just don't trash talk your producers. People magazine even conducted a poll about whether she should stay or she should go.
Apparently, we were all part of the game. Unbelievably, there are reports that Paula Abdul was in the midst of contract negotiations during these very public talks and she is seeking a raise! Whew. We've got a thing or two to learn from this lady. We would have never approached it quite like that...
Rest assured, America. There will still be changes to this season's "Idol". First and foremost, we're getting a new judge. We told you how Kara Dioguardi is injecting a little more estrogen into the karaoke contest. Now, we're learning that "Idol" 09 will be more uplifting and friendly. A fan blog received a leaked memo about the upcoming season and some important changes. Most notably the auditions will be cut back (less time making fun of people) and more time will be spent at the Hollywood week tryouts.
More people will make it to the Hollywood round with 36 going through and "AI" will be bringing back its wildcard round. Also, the producers are cutting out the charitable "Idol Gives Back" fundraiser to make it a once every two years event.
The memo also detailed how the promotions for this season will be "more aspirational" and show fewer bad singers. We're already seeing this in early advertising on WTTG locally.
So, was this "smear" campaign by Abdul really just a launching pad to weed out some of the mean Simon Cowell-y stuff and go all inspirational and supportive? We don't know for sure, but we feel used.
