
Ted Koppel -- former anchor of Nightline on ABC -- is looking for work again.
Following his broadcast anchoring stint, Koppel landed at Silver Spring-based Discovery Channel as Managing Editor. He brought with him a slew of his Nightline staff. When he came, Koppel signed a three-year deal with would put him in that spot until May 2009 with the basic cable channel.
Today, Discovery announced they have amicably dissolved their relationship with Koppel. In their press release, Discovery sited a desire to stay focused on long-format nonfiction specials and move away from traditional news content.
Koppel was no doubt an expensive employee. Discovery's typical content has a long shelf life and is largely evergreen, whereas news content is ever-changing and can have limited airings.
Koppel's last project for the net "The Last Lynching" (ironic, no?) aired several weeks ago. He made perhaps his biggest splash this summer when Discovery aired a four-hour documentary on Chinese society leading up to the Summer Olympics.
There's no word yet on where Koppel will land. We know that CNN's Headline News has a vacancy to fill left by Glenn Beck. But, don't try at Fox News, they are full-up with talent these days. Then again, there's always that "Meet The Press" gig...
