Conventional wisdom says we would probably watch less cable news since the election is over.
Conventional wisdom is wrong.
For one thing, we are still riveted by that issue the economy. Every ebb and flow of the market has us glued to our sets.
For another thing, all those rumors followed by announcements about Rahm Emanuel, then Hillary Clinton and now Eric Holder are keeping our eyes on the boob tube. We all want to know what Obama will do with this mandate we have given him.
Fox News, CNN and MSNBC all went up in ratings from last year for the week that followed Obama's election. FNC -- driven by "The O'Reilly Factor" -- ranked third in viewership for all cable networks... trailing only ESPN and USA.
We told you how host Bill O'Reilly is the new face of the network and has been everywhere over the last couple of weeks pumping his latest book. The efforts are working it would seem. The Fox News nightly audience exceeds last year's by a whopping 40% margin!
Even MSNBC, the struggling home of polarizing Keith Olbermann, claimed a 143% improvement over last year and notched in as the 11th-most-watched cable net.
CNN bested its last-year numbers by 16% (even better if you look at their demos) and claimed the 10th spot on the list.
Not all cable news is rosy though. Long-time anchor E.D. Hill is out at Fox News Channel. After close to 11 years, FNC has no home for her. This summer, her show "America's Pulse" was replace with "Live Desk" and she hasn't been back. If you've been following the news at this spot, then you know the net has to make room for CNN Headline News' Glenn Beck and just inked a deal to extend O'Reilly's contract.
