Do your pets understand you? Do you understand what your pets are trying to tell you? There is a way to learn how to connect more deeply with your furry and feathered friends. I have a few pets. I have one cat and 2 birds. Gabrielle, who is pictured here, is 19 years old. I also have a white dove,Mikael, also 19 years old, and a blue and gold macaw, Sha Nay who is only 18 years old. My communication with Sha Nay is the most profound. I find she responds the best to telepathic images. If I “send” her a picture of what I am referring to, instead of trying to communicate using words, she comprehends what I am trying to express much more quickly.
I recently realized that I have a number of friends who are “animal communicators.” I know I’ll be interviewing each of them over the months, but I decided to interview Lisa Shaw first as I’ve known her for over 20 years.
Margaret Ann: What is your background? Lisa Shaw: I began developing a lifelong interest in metaphysics in the 1980s just around the time of the harmonic convergence (remember that?). I began by taking classes and experiencing private sessions in energy clearing, crystals, meditation, intuitive development from teachers in my area. The most profound teacher for me was actually my therapist who was both a traditional mental health counselor and a metaphysical/spiritual mentor who helped me recover from childhood trauma so I traveled from a place of pain into a place of light and endless possibility. I began reading tarot cards professionally in the Palm Beach area at that time.
MA: What inspired you to become an animal communicator and healer? LS: Early in my metaphysical studies and career, I felt a twinge of jealousy regarding others who were more psychic, more "advanced" and accurate in their readings. In meditation, I received a very clear message from Spirit: "work on your own spiritual growth and all that you need will come to you." I listened and chose the healing path of reiki and spiritual healing in the form of intuitive counseling. Along the way I became attuned to my own animals and ailing schnauzer actually told me the origin of an illness that even her vet couldn't identify. I knew this was my gift. From then on, I felt more comfortable with the animals. When things are right, situations naturally find me, and more and more people began consulting me about their animal companions.
MA: Which animals are you most connected with?
LS: Dogs, of course, because I live with multiple dogs and have never been without them, but actually, the deepest and most profound connection I have is with birds, my own and wild. Very few people out there can imagine the depth of la bird's love, insight and wisdom. It's absolutely astounding.
MA: Can you always hear or know what the animal wants to communicate?
LS: I need to tune in just as I would with a person -- deep breathing, centering, attuning to higher energies, for me it's a meditative state....it is rare that I can't make a connection with the animal. Some, just like with people, are more eager to "spill the beans" and communicate than others at first. Honestly, there are never problems reaching the level of spiritual sharing with an animal. If there is ever a problem, it's the human being who presents it.
MA: What were some of your most profound experiences with animal communication?
LS: I have read for animals who are more spiritually advanced than I am...they see the whole picture; they operate from a higher perspective that we don't always see because our human flaws can present obstacles. The most profound instances are always with dogs who are facing death -- but who know it is transition and not death and who have no fear. More often than not they are concerned with comforting their human companion who is bracing for the terrible loss. It's not loss, they say....it's just a change of venue. Other instances that were profound were my ability to tune into a lost animal from a distance and communicate landmarks, helping to reunite him with the owner. It astounds me every time it happens. I serve as a conduit between the two, relaying information. From my home in Fort Lauderdale, I was able to locate a dog who'd been missing for two weeks in Oregon, giving his owner information about what the dog had seen and heard, which allowed her to track him. Just as she had given up, she looked at the notes I had given her and saw I mentioned a statue of a horse on its hind legs....instead of giving up, she remembered seeing a school with that very statue a few miles away, went back, saw woods behind the school and in calling her dog, heard a faint "yelp". The two of them yelped at each other until the yelps were louder and closer. It was a miraculous reunion... two weeks, lost without food or direction, and he survived.
MA: I understand you assist pet lovers deal with loss when their pets pass over. Share a bit of inspiration for those who may be reading this article about loss and grieving.
LS: We learn about the temporal nature of earthly life from our animals as they pass over; they are fearless. They change form but do not ever leave us. We need to learn the lessons of existence on other planes and our animals help us do that. It is very important that people know the animals never assign blame to anyone for their condition and they get very upset when they see us feeling guilty. In every instance that I've read for an animal about to make the transition, the animal was ready to go and presented the death experience as a visual escalation -- literally a walking upward, and as they climb, they get lighter and lighter until they no longer have any earthly density and are pure spirit. Their essence is pure spirit; a body is unnecessary. They want us to know they don't leave us. We need to adjust to a different paradigm and release our grip on the concrete. Love is eternal. They are eternal. They are love. It's that simple. They want us to get it.
MA: What do people not know about their animals?
LS: First of all, nothing gets by them. They observe and understand everything from the smallest nuance to the largest gadget. They are like children, eager to blurt out the family secrets innocently. I've had animals act like tattle tales from one spouse to another. One of myt favorite clients, a Chinese Crested Powder Puff named Misty, couldn't wait to tell me her mother Kathy flooded the bathroom by forgetting to turn off the faucet, only she let this information fly with Kathy's husband in the room; it obviously wasn't he first time she'd had such a mishap and he was visibly angry. Last week a long hair chihuahua told me she gets very angry when someone calls her a skunk. Her owners were a couple in their 70s, "Nobody calls her a skunk," the woman said. Her husband said, "Yes, Jack said she looked like a skunk last week." How did the dog know what a skunk was? How did she understand that? It's not in my power to say, only to relay the information, which was 100% accurate. The woman was shocked and her husband became a believer. This happens often. I once read a channeling book that said the spirits rejoice when we make contact. For the dogs it's the same thing. They are overjoyed at the opportunity to be heard.
MA: How has your work evolved from when you first started?
LS: It's much easier now, as the channels are open. However, it's also much more intense. I began to notice that more of my clients were terminally ill animals and in working with them, the sessions took on a more sacred energy. The combination of the Reiki and telepathic communication put us both in a sort of spiritual bubble where heart and soul are the only operative forces. The animals feel it, the people feel it, I feel it....so I searched for "real-world" credentials in grief counseling that would increase people's receptivity for the work I do. My highest honor came when my veterinarian used me and began referring people to me.
