Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal limited edition

News just out from Omega is a new version of the wildy popular Seamaster Planet Ocean watch - easily one of the most "Googled" timepiece of the last few years. The new version will utilize two new materials not before present in the line (or perhaps in any other Omega timepiece). The difference is in the bezel, one of the most important elements of a diver watch. As such, the two most important characteristics that a rotating diver's bezel can have are to look good, and be durable.

Previous bezel inserts on Seamaster Planet Oean watches were made of aluminum. These looked good, but were still printed numerals on the light metal. Plus, the bezels were prone to easily scratching. Following the lead of competitor watch brands such as Rolex, Omega upped the quality of the bezel by using a combination of Liquidmetal and black ceramic. This makes the numerals actual metal segments that are surrounded by the high sheen, highly scratch resistant material. Collectors agree that this is one of the areas that Omega needed to improve on, and they finally did. Still, the new type of bezel is an experiment. It will initially be released on a limited edition only Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal watch. There will be 1,948 of the watches, and if the new bezels are successful, Omega will likely include them in future watch models. Otherwise the limited edition watches will share the characteristics of the similar Seamaster Planet Ocean watches that are not limited editions with the Calibre 2500 automatic movement and large case size.
