The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) has been very busy this summer working on several initiatives that directly benefit the Los Angeles County cycling community. I recently spoke with Alex Amerri, Secretary and member of the LACBC Board of Directors. He and Dorothy Le, an LACBC staff member, provided me with the following statement from the organization:
“LACBC has been active on many fronts. Some exciting new projects are the 4th Street Bike Boulevard Campaign and the LA Bike Count. The 4th Street Campaign's aim is to transform 4th Street in Los Angeles, from Hoover to Alta Vista in Hancock Park, into a safe street for walking and biking. The LA Bike Count is working to count the number of bicyclists (and pedestrians) at busy bike intersections across the city of Los Angeles, in order to track the changes in the numbers of bicyclists and pedestrians from year-to-year due to policy and infrastructure changes. We are also working to make the LA Bike Plan the strongest and most useful plan it can be and working to get Sharrows (shared-lane markings) painted in Los Angeles by the end of 2009.
In order to work more locally, LACBC is developing neighborhood chapters. Thus far we have active Echo Park/Silverlake and Santa Monica Chapters. We have a PLACE Grant partnership with the City of Glendale to transform Glendale streets to be more bike and pedestrian friendly. We are working on the City of Lights program to empower low-income cyclists to transform their neighborhoods."
The LACBC is passionate about supporting bicycling-related advocacy, education and outreach in Los Angeles County and is an excellent organization to get involved with, become a member of or donate to. They recently began their $5,000 a Month Goal, and if you would like to help them reach it, please go here.
Even while working diligently on multiple community projects, LACBC found time to design their line of 2009 cycling attire. Check out the mock designs for their jerseys, shorts, bibs, gloves, arm warmers and socks. And for a real-life visual, Mr. Amerri and LACBC staff member Megan Dean graciously modeled a jersey from the recent LACBC River Ride.

Now, that’s one nice looking jersey!
The deadline for ordering the 2009 clothing is Thursday, August 20th, 2009. Click here to place your order now!
