Are you new to cycling and are not sure where to ride in Southern California? Or, perhaps you are a seasoned cyclist looking for a new route to explore and an adventure on two wheels that you’ve not yet discovered? Check out the best Los Angeles cycling routes below as there are many to choose from, and more will be added on an ongoing basis. As a recreational endurance cyclist, I have personally ridden all of the routes I’ve provided. Please pay close attention to the MapMyRide maps included in each route description article, be safe out on the road and have fun!

DISCLAIMER: I am not a coach or professional trainer, nor do I claim to be. The routes are merely suggestions, and the roads mapped are public, thereby open to motorists as well as cyclists. Please follow all safety rules of the road, wear a helmet and Road ID, and do not ride alone in remote areas. Each individual cyclist is responsible for his/her own safety. Ride at your own risk.

Beginner to intermediate Los Angeles cycling routes

Rio Hondo Bike Path

Rio Hondo Bike Path

A 50-mile out-n-back that is mostly flat and suitable for riders of all levels given that the route can be shortened if need be (just turn around!)

San Gabriel River Trail (SGRT)

San Gabriel River Trail (SGRT)

A 72-mile out-n-back to Seal Beach that is mostly flat and offers several water stops along the way.  Suitable for the more intermediate rider, although beginners can join and turn back if need be.

Mt. Hollywood Canyon to the Griffith Park Observatory

Mt. Hollywood to the Griffith Park Observatory

A great training hill for beginners and intermediate riders.  A benefit of this ride is that for most of it, there are no cars!

Fisherman's Village North to Will Rogers Sate Beach or South to Manhattan Beach Pier

Perfect for beginners and families, these routes are best traveled on beach cruisers at a relaxed pace.

Pacific Coast Highway from Malibu to Ventura

A ride that begins on Pacific Coast Highway in north Malibu, outside Neptune's Net, and heads up the coast, inland to Ventura and back.  Beautiful views on a clear, sunny day!

Intermediate to advanced LA cycling routes (not for beginners!)

Angeles Crest Highway - Red Box Junction Up

A remote ride in the Angeles National Forest that offers stunning views and mostly quiet roads.  Watch out for motorists and only attempt this ride if you are at an intermediate to advanced level.

Big Tujunga Canyon Road (Big T)

Big Tujunga Canyon Road (Big T)

A beautiful, scenic ride with a challenging climb up to Angeles Crest Highway to Red Box Junction.  Not for the faint of heart!

Little Tujunga Canyon Road (Little T)

Little Tujunga Canyon Road (Little T)

Big T's little sister, this canyon is steeper and gives way to stunning views of its own.  Climb this and descend into Tujunga Valley and back for a real challenge and excellent training route!

Glendora Mountain Road (Big GMR)

Glendora Mountain Road (Big GMR)

A 10-mile climb in Glendora, CA that offers stunning views and a fantastic descent (that you must earn!).  Great place for hill repeats and other training.

Mt. Baldy via Hwy 39

Mt. Baldy via Hwy 39

My personal favorite, this ride will not disappoint even the most advanced cyclist.  Not for beginners!  But for all other riders, you will have earned the potato skins you order at the Mt. Baldy ski lodge on this climb.

Crystal Lake (Hwy 39)

Crystal Lake (Hwy 39)

A climb worthy of a pro.  Lance Armstrong made it look easy back in 2005, but don't let that fool you.  It is not recommended for any rider but the most advanced endurance cyclist, as it is one tough, remote mountain road!
