The Panini Press in Berkley adds fresh local flavor to the Berkley/Royal Oak quick casual dining scene.
Opened this past summer, owner Linda Skoczek thought up the concept and found a vacant storefront close to home. The menu is pretty simple, nine hot Panini sandwiches named after famous newspapers--“hot off the press”, get it?!
Panini (Italian grilled sandwiches) are served on locally baked artisan breads. Choices include Ciabatta, Italian, and Multi-Grain, along with white and wheat lavash, and lettuce wraps. For two bucks more, guests with gluten sensitivities can enjoy Gluten Free bread!
I chose the Kansas City Press with shaved roast beef, caramelized red onions, provolone cheese and a smoky bbq sauce. The sandwich was delicious, with a nice balance of flavors. For an extra $1.50 diners can order double meat. Not a bad deal at all!
My lunch companion ordered the San Francisco Daily featuring Roma tomatoes, mozzarella, fresh basil and a balsamic vinaigrette. She gave it two thumbs up, noting how well the warm gooeyness of the cheese felt on a damp and chilly day.
Another veggie option is the New York Herald, with roasted red and yellow peppers, creamy brie and red pepper mayo. There is also an Italian sandwich, the Boston Bulletin, which features hard salami, mortadella, capicola, provolone, lettuce, tomato and vinaigrette. On my next visit, I think this will be an offer I cannot refuse.
Sides include Michigan’s own Better Made potato chips, cole slaw or daily soups. There’s also free wi-fi while you dine.
