Today was the grand opening of the Wegman's grocery store in Fredericksburg, Virginia. And what a grand opening it was. Traffic was backed up two miles before the entrance. Police were directing traffic in the parking lot. Grocery carts were scarce. Checkout lines were impossibly long. Surprising in all of this was the easy-go-lucky camaraderie of patrons. Try finding that on a Saturday afternoon in a long line at Giant. Of course, it was the first day, and none of us expects those kinds of lines to continue; but still, humanity was in good form today considering the crowd.
Perhaps that is to be expected with foodies. We have been waiting for this store for a long time. It is long overdue. Rotten produce, a lack of organic meat and inferior prepared foods have plagued this area. One store made a good attempt at solving these problems, but did not go near the length that Wegman's has. If one grocer can meet our needs, then all of them can.
Lots of us put in some driving distance today to greet our new Wegman's. We probably would not have done that with such enthusiasm if our local stores would give us what we want rather than make us put up with what they offered. Wegman's is off to a great start in this area. If our other markets step up to the plate, I'm sure they would be greeted with the same respect. In a tough economy especially, groceries are a big portion of most families' budgets. We are trying to look out for ourselves. Stores that understand that will do well here, and Wegman's is at the top of that list.
