In this era of trying to combine smaller budgets with 'going green' and sustainability even urbanites are trying to raise chickens and grow their own food. The U.S. Botanic Garden wants to remind you that your average garden is more than a pretty face: gardens are also a source of nutritious food. Yesterday, the U.S. Botanic Garden had a Culinary Arts Festival with demos on solar cooking and preparing garden-grown foods, tastings and activities for kids.
The U.S. Botanic Garden's indoor Conservatory and outdoor National Garden are a font to information about what to plant and when and how plants can help improve the environment. Walking through and reading the info provided alongside the plants can be quite educational.
But we don't want to dwell too much on the functional properties of plants, after all they still are quite decorative. Until October 12, 2009, you can see Flora: Growing Inspirations, an exhibit of "highly stylized garden rooms" that feature sculptures inspired by plants that has been presented in partnership with Washington Sculptors Group.
Upcoming events at the U.S. Botanic Garden include:
Weekend Tours of the National Garden - Saturdays, September 5,12,26
Chocolate: A Consumer's Guide & Tasting - September 18 & October 3
