Fostering a love of literature and the arts starts early and no one knows this better than the staff at The Reading Connection (TRC). This reading-focused nonprofit was started in the DC area in 1989.
The staff works to make certain that childen who are living in homeless shelters and transitional housing don't miss out on the benefits have being read to. TRC volunteers read aloud to children in housing crisis and the organization provides the children with new, free books to call their own. TRC also follows up with the children's families to see that the kids continue the reading habit.
"Reading aloud to children is the single most important thing we can do to help kids learn to read," says Judy Hijikata, TRC's Communications Director.
You can join The Reading Connection for a citywide literary event next Monday, October 13 from 7 to 9 pm at The Washington Post.
