Friday's Child is loving and giving - and in need of a good home.
The Chicago Tribune had an article by Stacy St. Clair today. The news is that the Chicago Police Department adopted a black, 16-month-old Labrador Retriever to work in their narcotics division. Instead of buying a dog from a breeder, they saved a rescue dog. The dog, Pantera was adopted from the Animal Welfare League, which took him in after a landlord banned pets. It's a wonderful success story on so many levels. Rather than retelling the story that Stacy St. Clair told so well, I would like to take this opportunity to find homes for more dogs sitting in shelters.
Although all shelter dogs deserve a good home, this post will focus on black dogs - like Pantera. Readers of my blog might already know about "Black Dog Syndrome." If you'd like a refresher, please go to my prior post to find out that black dogs are the last to be adopted.
I'd like to give a special call out for six-year old Nala, a Chow / Shepherd mix at PAWS Chicago. If black dogs have a hard time getting adopted, imagine a six-year old. Now, imagine that the dog is rather large. Nala's sweet personality is not enough to get over these issues for some people. Others, fortunately don't see them as issues at all. I encourage you to take a look at Nala at the top of this post. She may be just the dog for you. For more information on Nala go to the PAWS Chicago site.
Nala is not the only black dog in need of a loving home this week in Chicago. Please check out Agatha in the photograph below. She is a one-year old, cattle dog / basenji mix. Agatha is at ARFhouse Chicago, where you can find out more about her. The photograph below is of Agatha with

Sam is a one-and-a-half year-old labrador retriever at the Animal Welfare League, like Pantera. Sam has been at the shelter since July. You can see a picture of Sam and find out how to adopt him by going to the Animal Welfare League site.
Drew, pictured here from his page and home at Chicago Canine Rescue, is a retriever, labrador, shar-pei mix. He is nearly two-years old and in need of a good home. Find out how to adopt Drew by going to the Chicago Canine Rescue web page.
Zoey, is a one and a half year-old Akita at the Anti-Cruelty Society. She is friendly and needs a good home.
You can find out more about her at the Anti-Cruelty site, including information about meeting and adopting her.
It seems strange to me that black dogs have a problem getting adopted. They are just as sweet and in need of a loving home as any other dog. Please take a good look at these faces or visit your own local shelter, then do what you can to find a good home for a dog in need.
