CARSON - For the Goats, the similarities to the United States run at the Confederations Cup ended on Saturday, even before they took the field to face Los Gladiadores (The Gladiators) de San Luis.  With Tigres defeating the Fire 2-1 earlier, the Goats were officially eliminated from the 2009 edition of Superliga. However, the result of this match would play a part in who would advance from the group.  San Luis had to win if it wished to advance to the semifinals.

There was not much to show for the first half of the match as it came and went for the Goats as the score remained 0-0.  Though defender Claudio Suarez was taken out as a precaution in the 37th minute after suffering a calf strain in his right leg.  The second half of the match saw more substitutions as Attiba Harris, and Sasha Victorine entered to replace Maykel Galindo, and Jesse Marsch.  Recently signed Cesar Zamora (formerly of the U-18 youth squad) also debuted for the senior side coming in for Carey Talley in the 61st minute.  Goalkeeper Zach Thornton was subbed out for second year keeper Lance Parker.

In the 52nd minute, Lance Parker brought down Jose Reyes of San Luis in the box which resulted in a penalty that teammate Alfredo Moreno converted.  The one-goal lead stood for most of the second half.  When it seemed that San Luis would join the Fire in the semifinals, Attiba Harris headed in a corner at the 88th minute mark.  With the 1-1 draw, the potential six points that San Luis would have earned, became four.  As a result, Tigres joined the Fire in the semifinals along with the New England Revolution, and Santos Laguna who beat Atlas, and Kansas City respectively on Sunday afternoon.

As for the Goats, they earned a point in the group standings, ended their four-match losing streak in all competitions, and bowed out of yet another competition early.  Up next is a US Open Cup fixture against last years runners up, the Charleston Battery.  The match won't be available on local TV, but will be streamed live on http://usllive.com/  at 4:30pm local time on Tuesday, June 30th.

In other Goats related news, both Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Kljestan came off the bench in the United States 3-2 loss to Brazil in the FIFA Confederations Cup Final.
