Built in 1832 and still filled with its original furniture, the Merchant’s House on East 4th Street is the real thing--a house haunted by the tales of those who once lived there. For more than 100 years, it was occupied by generations of New York’s Treadwell family. In 1840 Gertrude, daughter of Eliza and Seabury Treadwell, was born in the elegant Federal-style townhouse. Ninety-three years later, she died in the place where she was born. Some people believe her ghost still walks the halls.

On Octbober 29th and 30th you can join a candlelight ghost tour of the Merchant’s House. You’ll see eerie scenes of 19th-century death and mourning and hear what paranormal investigators have uncovered about the historic house on East 4th Street.

On Halloween night, Merchant’s House storyteller Anthony Bellov will tell spine-tingling ghost stories about the house and read from 19th-century horror classics.

But if you have children in your group, it’s best to visit Merchant’s House during the daylight hours of Halloween to attend the “Family-Friendly Ghost Tours." And don’t forget that Merchant’s House Museum is open year-round. No matter when you visit, you'll always get a fascinating trip back in time.
