Atheist billboards and bus ads are going up in cities across the nation and Christians aren’t happy. Recently in Fort Lauderdale, Florida a billboard went up which had the following message: “Being a good person doesn't require God. Don’t believe in God? You’re NOT alone.”

INAtheistBus.org recently won the right to put up a bus ad in Bloomington, Indiana which states, “You can be good without god.”

In both of these cases, Christians groups have protested strongly and these ads have been considered “controversial” by the media. Philadelphia was one of the first areas to put up an atheist billboard and when I saw the reaction from Christian groups here, I decided to start a project on DangerousTalk.net to help combat the “controversial” label being thrown at atheist groups. So I started the “Billboard Wars Project.”

I have started to ask people from all over the country to take photos of atheist and Christian billboards and bus ads that they see and to send them to me (along with the city and state). The idea is to have a little comparison and see what is controversial and what is not. Apparently, claiming that morality can be (and I would even argue must be) secular is controversial. It also seems that simply asking the question, “Don’t believe in god?” is controversial. These billboards on the other hand don’t seem controversial:

For those of you who don’t have your Bible’s handy, John 3:36 states, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

Oh but there are more Christian billboards out there that I think are maybe just a little over the top:

It seems obvious to me which side has the more offensive billboards. Maybe you have a different opinion on what constitutes “controversy” than I do, but I really don’t think these atheist billboards and bus ads are all that shocking. They aren’t even criticizing religion at all nor are they targeting religion beliefs or people. What a ridiculous world we live in. If you see any Billboards in your area, please feel free to send them to the Billboard Wars Project.
