Now that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is retiring, the media is asking who should be the next Supreme Court Justice. From MSNBC to Fox News and every news network in between the question is asked, should Obama pick a woman, an African American, a Latino American, etc.
We live in a scientific age and an age in which America is still fighting off the civil liberty attacks of the Religious Right. In the last administration, two Religious Right Supreme Court Justices were appointed. One of them was even made Chief Justice. It is time for Obama to look toward the scientific community for the next Justice of the Supreme Court.
But the need for a person of reason goes beyond identity politics and attempting to balance out the Bush picks. Important issues involving stem cells, cloning, science education, supercolliders, and technologies not yet conceived could be in front of the Supreme Court in the next 50 years. A person of reason from the scientific community would be best qualified to sit in Souter’s seat and judge free from ancient superstitions.
