It's a season that has gone from bad, to worse, to downright embarrassing, and the latest reports suggest that it could cost Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio his job.
Saturday's 2-1 loss at Toronto FC was New York's sixth consecutive loss and leaves it at the foot of the Eastern Standings with just nine points from 15 games.
The Bulls' record on the road is the real cause for concern at this point in the season – they have yet to win a game away from home. In fact, they are on a 20-game winless road streak, stretching back to last year.
Here are just a few stats from Osorio's time as manager that make for uncomfortable reading:
- A 20-game winless road streak, the longest such run in MLS history.
- The fewest away goals scored of any team in the league so far this season (1).
- A career road record of 1-15-7, which adds up to over 13 months without a victory away from home.
- Last in the league this season with a 2-10-3 record (tied with San Jose) and also last in goals scored (13).
Those statistics are just a small sampling of how bad things really are with the Red Bulls, and it's no surprise that Osorio's job is on the line. With five of the Red Bulls' next seven games on the road it seems to be only a matter of time before a change is made.
According to the New York Daily News a source at MLS said that Osorio has been on “shaky ground” for the past two weeks. That source also told the Daily News that the team looked like it 'played with no heart' in a recent loss to the New England revolution.
League managing director Erik Stover was not available for comment after the loss on Saturday, but it is rumored he will discuss the coach's future with club management in Salzburg, Austria this week. The Bulls, meanwhile, are gearing up for next Saturday's home game with Seattle.
This is the second meeting of the sides this season and - if he still has a job - Osorio will be hoping for a better result than the 3-0 loss New York suffered against the Sounders on opening day.
