With summer right around the corner and school winding down, many gamers will have a few more hours to spare for gaming.  To help them fill this void of time, I'd like to share my "Top 10" Nintendo DS games that I've played so far. These are by no means the best or highest rated games for the DS, but games I've actually enjoyed playing and kept coming back to.  And in no particular order...here is the list!

10.  Brain Age 2

I have to start with the most obvious!  Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day was the driving force behind my DS purchase.  The whole Brain Age phenomenon piqued my interest, and once I heard of the sequel I knew I couldn't wait to jump on the bandwagon much longer.  Yes, the first 10-20 minutes with the game made me feel completely stupid, but this brain training stuff really did work! I got the whole family invovled, and everyone wanted to borrow my Nintendo DS and Brain Age 2 game.  This game will definitely work your brain, but it's a very fun process.  Plus, it's completely humorous to watch someone scream "Rock, Paper, Rock, Rock Agghhh " at their DS.

9. Picross DS

Picross DS was the second game I picked up for the DS, and this has consumed, and still does, many gaming hours.  Many people look at this as the "Soduko Alternative", as it can actually be more relaxing than a Soduko puzzle.  It's a game many gamers of all ages can easily learn, and it's the perfect "play anywhere, anytime" game.  If you've never heard of Picross, check around the Internet, as there are plenty of playable web versions available.  Warning: Addiction will occur

8. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords

Two puzzle games in a row, and for good reason!  Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, just like Picross DS, was completely addicting and had the ability to engulf dozens upon dozens of gaming hours.  This game took the "Bejeweled" style puzzle mechanic, and added a whole battle system and RPG theme to it.   You were able to select your character class, equip weapons and accessories, and level up and learn new spells and abilities.  Although some of the battles felt a little too long, there was a ton of fun to be had in Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords.  Another addicting game that I still go back and play!

7. Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure

What? Another puzzle game?  Absolutely! I just recently finished a review for Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, and althought it has just been recently released, it easily makes this top 10 list.  This game takes the puzzle and platforming genre, mixes it together, and creates a wonderful experience that gamers should not miss out on.  And as a tip, as cute and friendly as the cover looks, this game will definitely give even the hardcore community a bit of a run.  This game gives "Tea Time" a whole new meaning.

6. Elite Beat Agents

I first heard of and played Elite Beat Agents on a DS kiosk in Wal-Mart.  I played all of 45 seconds, couldn't figure out what I was doing, and got so frustrated I had to leave.  I returned a few minutes later to see some middle school aged kids huddled around the DS kiosk playing this game.  I had no other choice but to go home and google this mysterious beast.  The results I found were amazing.  Between the high scores and all the good things I heard from gamers and reviewers I had to get my hands on a copy of this.  And I did.

Elite Beat Agents was the first music and rhythm game that I played on the Nintendo DS, and it still remains as my favorite.  The gameplay is addicting, most of the songs are catchy and fun, and the story line is hilarious.  I've replayed several stages just to watch the stories play out.  The colorful and vibrant "comic strips" really add to the overall appeal and charm of the game.  Just don't blame me if you start dancing along with this game...

5. Bleach: The Blade of Fate

As much fun as all of these puzzle and music games are, sometimes you just ned a good old fashioned, 2D fighter.  Bleach: The Blade of Fate delivered the best fighting game to the Nintendo DS, and one of the best 2D fighters today.  On top of being the best fighting game for the DS, it also has the Bleach license to back it up.  I love 2D fighters and I'm a huge Bleach fan, so this game brought it all together for me.  I will make every effort to pick up the 2nd Bleach game for the DS, as well as the upcoming third game which isn't a fighter, but an RPG.

4.  The World Ends With You

Simply put, The World Ends With You is an amazing game.  From start to finish, this game was a joy and a pure masterpiece.  The RPG battle system was very different than any other RPG game I've played, it had a little bit of a learning curve, but was well executed and fun.  The story, plot, theme, setting, and soundtrack were all amazing.  Oh, and the art style was amazing too.  Don't come into this game expecting your typical, re-hashed RPG.  It's so much more than that and one of the best RPG's on the Nintendo DS. Very original, and for the $20 price tag it is well worth that and more.  My personal favorite RPG for the Nintendo DS. Uterly awesome.

3. Luminous Arc

I'm a huge fan of strategy RPP (SRPG) games, so there was no doubt that on Nintendo DS SRPG game would make my top 10 favorite list.  Out of all of the SRPG games on the Nintendo DS, my favorite for right now is Luminous Arc.  I know, there is Disgaea DS and Final Fantasy Tactics A2, which are both very good games, but Luminous Arc was the first SRPG that I played on the DS and the game that got me hookd on DS SRPG games.  I personally thought the story was engaging and the action was well paced and a lot of fun.  I'm a huge fan of the anime inspired art style and thought it was presented perfectly.  There was also actual voice over, which was a nice surprise.  This probably isn't the best SPRG game for the hardcore crowd, but I do think a lot of DS gamers can enjoy it.  I certainly did, and I can't wait to play the second one

2. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

I never had the pleasure of playing Wind Waker for the Gamecube, but I didn't hesitate to jump all over The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass when it released on the Nitnendo DS.  Just like The World Ends With You, the story, plot, settings, battle system, music, and graphics are all extraordinary.  The controls were fairly easy to get accustomed to and the puzzles were well thought out, and not overly difficult.  Even if you're not a huge Zelda fan, Phantom Hourglass offers a great adventure all the way through.  I'm now a fan of the cel-shaded style, and the stylus controls were actually fun and intuitive. This game definitely brought back all of the joyous memories of playing classic Zelda games, and I can't wait to dive into the upcoming sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.

1. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Take that!  Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm a pretty big Manga reader, so when I heard that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney was a visual novel game, I got all giddy inside.  Although it's a visual novel, Ace Attorney was very engaging and interactive. The dialogue and characters are great, and very hilarious. There is a lot of reading invovled, but that was part of the charm.  To be able to sit back, relax, and read your way through the story on your DS was very cool and you can easily put in many hours in one sitting. I sure did.  The courtoom scenes were pretty intense, and I couldn't wait to see what expressions the characters would make next.   I could go on and on about all of the great things this game has to offer, but there are countless reviewers and gamers out there that have Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney in their top 10 lists as well.   And if you haven't heard, Miles Edgeworth will be in the latest Ace Attorney game, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth.

That's my current top 10 favorite Nintendo DS games.  There are about a dozen other games that came close (Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow/Potrait of Ruin, Lunar Knights, Pokemon: Diamond/Pearl), but I haven't had a chance to play them or put in a decent amount of time to say if they could make the cut or not.  We still have the second half of 2009 to go, and a ton of great 2009 releases yet to come.  I'll try to post an update list around the holidays, and we'll see how much my top 10 favorite Nintendo DS games change.

Please feel free to share your top 10 favorite Nintendo DS games with us!
