Sunday afternoons and evenings are perfect days to eat out.  The weekend crowds aren't there, as many people in the Indy Metro area are prepping for school/work what have you.  It was actually with that in mind that I headed out to Casler's Kitchen and Bar to grab a burger and relax with my wife.  I'd been to Casler's a few times before, but had never sampled the burgers - something that I decided to rectify last night.  Looking over their menu, I spotted one of my all time favorite types of burgers, the patty melt.

Patty Melt
Our 10 oz. burger topped with aged Vermont cheddar and Swiss cheeses and
caramelized onions. Served on pumpernickel bread.

Honestly, I didn't have high hopes - I was coming off a bad experience earlier that day with a different burger at a different restaurant, and didn't want to get myself excited if I was ultimately going to be let down.  Let me emphasize: I was not let down.  In fact, I was blown away by the patty melt when it arrived.  Sadly, I didn't have my camera to take a good picture, but I did grab a snap with my wife's iPhone.  Let's hit the checklist of greatness:

  • Juicy Patty?  Check
  • Two slices of well melted cheese?  Check
  • Caramelized onions?  Check
  • Fresh toppings? Check
  • Good bread? Check!

I ordered the patty melt medium rare, hoping that it would at least come out medium and not cooked all the way through.  The burger actually came out medium rare - the fact that Casler's actually cooked the burger to order and got medium rare right would be enough right there for me to recommend them, but on top of that the burger itself was money.  Perfectly seasoned, topped with the swiss, cheddar, and caramelized onions, it was a great patty melt.  The final piece that tied the whole experience together though was the pumpernickel bread that the burger came on.  Nice and soft, just a bit of a toast on it, and a hint of sweetness brought the entire package together.

Casler's falls in to the category of "pub burgers"; the patty melt ran about 9 bucks, so while it's more expensive than a fast food burger, it's more than worth the cost just for the quality of ingredients and the attention to detail paid to cooking your burger to order.  I can't tell you how great it is to order a burger medium rare, and have it come out medium rare and juicy on the inside.  Casler's absolutely nailed the patty melt - definitely worth your money if you're in the Fishers/Geist area.  Oh yeah, one more thing: their fries were right on the money.
