All across the country and in other parts of the world, atheist ad campaigns have been popping up on city buses and trains. Now Boston is taking part with signs showing up on MBTA trains with ads stating, “Good without God? Millions of Americans are.” These words are part of a multi-organizational campaign to raise awareness about atheists, non-believers, and secular humanists. The website on the ad, BostonCoR.org, is a great resource for finding local atheist and humanist groups, of which the Boston Atheists are a member.
Fred Edwords, head of the United Coalition of Reason, stated that the campaign is meant to “reach out to the millions of humanists, atheists and agnostics living in the United States. Nontheists sometimes don't realize there's a community out there for them because they're inundated with religious messages at every turn. So we hope this will serve as a beacon and let them know they aren't alone.”
Another goal for the campaign is to help promote a positive message about nontheists to the theist communities. Greg Epstein, coordinator of the Boston Area Coalition of Reason and the humanist chaplain at Harvard said, “There is a lot of misinformation out there about nontheists. But we humanists, agnostics and atheists are everywhere… We care about our communities and live by our ethical values.”
The Ads in Boston received $11,000 in funding from the United Coalition of Reason. The ads will appear on 200 subway cars on Red and Green lines, and will last for at least a month.
According to WHDH, reception of the ads is generally positive with only a small amount of negative reaction.
