A war has been waged on Twitter, and it’s about God. According to Twitter’s trending topic note, user RevRunWisdon tweeted, “Know God... Know Peace. No God.. No Peace!.” This Twitter preacher has over 300,000 followers, and as a result many people “retweeted” the phrase causing “No God” to become a trending topic. Atheists caught on and began tweeting their own response, “No God, Know Peace.” The phrase “No God” then flew to Twitter’s top trending topic spot.
This Twitter war has caused a flurry of Twitter Atheists and Theists to argue about God, some resorting to insults, others to clever jokes. I found it also ironic that some theists would complain about the “No God” trending topic, and by mentioning it they perpetuated the topic. As a result, Twitter has been crashing repeatedly and showing off its “Fail Whale” page.
Amusing Twitter war aside, I find the phrase “Know God... Know Peace. No God.. No Peace!” to be a laughable concept. It is a known fact that many wars and acts of violence are a result of religious fervor. How, then, is peace achieved by “knowing” God?
Are they instead referring to inner peace? How does “knowing” God make one feel peaceful? Does this phrase not impose a judgment on those who disbelieve that their life is unsatisfying and turbulent? A recent study actually showed the opposite, that non-believers are more emotionally healthy than theists or agnostics. Appealing phrase as it is to theists, especially with its play on homophones, it is clearly an absurd notion.
Update: The phrase "No God" was suddenly stricken from Twitter's top trending topics list, most likely to stop the website from crashing. However, people are still tweeting about "No God" and complaining that it's censorship. Some also say that it's because Twitter combined "No God" with "Know God".
