All ages enjoy the activities Nahant offers

Perhaps it’s just too early to start previewing local beaches, after all the past few days of record breaking heat were, well, just that. Sure, we’ve still got another month or so until the temperature stays at a steady 72 Fahrenheit , but there’s no denying the next time that thermometer starts to head upwards, you’ll be looking for the nearest bay, bayou, or ocean to dip your toes in. So why not get a head start on things—and plan your visit to Nahant Beach a few weeks in advance?

The scene today at Nahant Beach, which connects the city of Lynn and the town of Nahant in a long narrow strip, was seemingly a standard summer day: the temperature peaked at about 91 degrees and the beach was covered with toddlers, seagulls, teens, footballs, and Frisbees. Too bad today was a Tuesday, in late April and not the 4th of July. Regardless that this early taste of summer came midweek and with little warning—there were literally countless number of kids and grown-ups playing hooky trying to catch the rays and refreshment that this vibrant beach has to offer. Nahant Beach is truly unique: it offers accessibility from the city yet feels remote and Cape Cod-like in many ways. Essentially, this beach is easy to get to, but it’s not covered in trash, or broken bottles and you won’t be interrupted by planes taking off or landing at Logan every 20 minutes, like you might at other nearby beaches. You can still catch a glimpse of the Boston skyline by looking over the Causeway towards the South, and it’s only a 25 minute ride from downtown. If you drive, parking only costs $3 (May-Sep), and it’s also accessible by public transportation!

Once you arrive there are places to change and restrooms along the beach as well: no sketchy port-o-potties or frequent trips to “go dip in the ocean.” Tote along the sunscreen and umbrellas though, because there are no natural breaks from the sun on this beach, and make sure to park your blanket above the tide line, since this already narrow beach almost disappears at high tide. Best of all, don’t forget to bring Fido too—Nahant Beach is pooch friendly too!

Not only is the beach long, and beautiful—it also gives you a great cross-section of the quintessential New England beach experience. While you’re there, it’s worth it to spend some time taking in the locals, who are just as proud of their own distinctive beach as they are of their brawny Northshore accents. Where else, for example, can you find an incognito Dunkin’ Donuts (painted standard colonial colors to “blend in”) steps away from the sand because it appears to be a necessity for beachgoers? And you certainly can’t leave without grabbing some great New England favorites like a Lobster Roll, fried clams, or ice cream at the walk-up window of Tides restaurant (which, if I had to guess, may also be the largest purveyor of Bud Light North of the Mason -Dixon Line, too). Altogether, this beach is a trip; beautiful and idiosyncratic at the same time.

Between your “turbo shot” iced coffee, a messy crustacean on a hot dog roll, and perhaps a few highly visible Celtics tattoos you should be able to get away with claiming this little stretch of sand as your own. And even if you’re only going for the sun, you don’t want to miss a trip to this great beach right outside your front door.
