Nintendo has enjoyed unprecedented success with the Wii because according to most gamers, it's a fad. A fad that has been the consistently the top selling console for each month for 12 straight months. Is it the price? Probably? Is it the non-intidating input devices (they're called Remotes)? Maybe. But no matter what the selling point may be, the Wii has had an awesome lineup of software of 2008, despite what some critics may think.
This list isn't to pick the top 10 or best 'this' or best 'that', although I do pick a game of the year. This list represents in the best games on the system in 2008 and the whole point of playing video games is to buy a lot of them and play a lot of them, not just pick one and be happy with.
No More Heroes:Publisher-Ubisoft, Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture-Never mind that this was a great action game for the Wii, this game had so many great things going for it: the music, the intense, viscerally blood-soaked action, the hilarious, satirical plot, the great voice acting, the fluid controls, the retro HUD. This game is so awesome and full of so much ambition and glee, you wonder why every other game can't be like No More Heroes. A true gamer's game. Best Wii Game of 2008!
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Publisher-Nintendo, Developer: Nintendo/Hal/Sora LTD.-I'll concede that playing online...is bad. It's filled with lag. But the most fun in multiplayer is had when there's a crowd in one room (take that, Internet!). This is still one of the best multiplayer games and the game packed with so many modes and challenges and too many things to unlock, that it'll be impossible to be bored. Plus, with the incredible soundtrack, this is the ultimate in Nintendo fan service.
Call of Duty: World at War: Publisher-Activision, Developer: Treyarch-Hardcore Wii owners who like first-person shooters, be jealous of no longer! Not only is this a solid FPS game with a great, albeit repetitive campaign, it brings the incredible online multiplayer from COD4, complete with perks and challenges, giving people a great incentive to try hard and succeed, giving it an edge over Medal of Honor Heroes 2. Kudos to Treayarch for putting a game on the Wii with out dumbing down the quality, something most ports can't do.
Boom Blox: Publisher:EA Games, Developer: EA Blueprint-On paper, a puzzle a game that revolves around using the Wii Remote in various ways to complete different task. In practice, one of the most addictive and creative games in years, complete with a level editor and challenges to hardcore gamers busy, but simple and flexible enough for anyone to actually pick up and enjoy.
World of Goo: Publisher-Independent, Developer: 2D Boy-In an age of expensive budgets and massive layoffs, indy games are going to be the place where creativity will meet with playability and result in some awesome games and no game exemplifies that than World of Goo, a hilarious puzzle game that stretches the imagination of what a player can do with pieces of goo and remote and when the results are so satisfying, there's no way to put the remote down in the Wiiware's killer app.
de Blob: Publisher: THQ, Developer: Blue Tongue-One of the best puzzle/platformer games this year, there's so much joy to derive from just moving your character around and watching cities come to life with such color. The extra modes and challenges are just bonuses from one of the most charming and satisfying games this year.
Okami: Publisher: Capcom, Developer: Clover/Ready At Dawn-Yes, it's a port....of a complete breathtaking and engrossing adventure. The graphics and art impresses from the start of the game and the gameplay just throws so many things to unlock and accomplish and combined with a gorgeous soundtrack, don't pass this game up.
Blast Works: Build Trade & Destroy: Publisher: Majesco, Developer: Budcat Creations-A new 2D shooter just seems like an instant ticket to be ignored but the hook of shooter which you can use defeated enemies and make your own ship bigger reverts it to an instant ticket of being fun. And it also has a level creator that allows people to create their own shooter and share them online, this is another case where ambition can always exceed budget limitations.
Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip: Publlisher: Ubisoft, Developer: Ubisoft Montreal-Now if this was just a game where you ride down different mountatins using only the Balance Board, then that fact alone would make this game awesome enough due to how fun it is simulate riding a snowboarding on a board. Then, the game adds very simple objectives to complete and superior controls over the 360/PS3 version, giving a great game that gamers, hardcore and casual alike can enjoy. Now you can snowboarding without worrying about freezing to death.
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People: Publisher: Telltale Games, Developer: Telltale Games/Videlectrix-A great point and click adventure game that runs on the humor of the Homestar Runner franchise and has a lot of fan service for anyone who's ever visited the website and its more proof that a big game can be done on an online service, not just retail.
Mario Sluggers Baseball: Publisher: Nintendo, Developer: Namco Bandai-You'd think as fun as the baseball game was on Wii Sports, that it would be enough for other developers to make baseball games on. But none of them have got it right like this version of Mario-infused baseball packed with enough baseball to enjoy if you like the sport of baseball, and it throws in the usual Mario trappings to give it an arcade-like sense of fun.
Mega Man 9: Publisher: Capcom, Developer: Inti Creates-Calling this game retro really doesn't do it justice as it feels more like a Mega Man game that Capcom forgot to release after Mega Man 2. While the difficulty is enough to make a nun curse, it part's of the game's design, which means a lot of trial-and-error and memorization, just like the past Mega Man games. If you consider yourself hardcore, then get ready to be humbled and delighted.
Mario Kart Wii: Publisher: Nintendo, Developer: Nintendo-With online play and Mii inclusion, this should've been the best version in the Mario Kart franchise. But with cheaper A.I. and dumbed down design that allows anyone to actually win, I can't recommend it wholeheartedly. But even a bland Nintendo game is more exciting than any kart game by any other developer.
Wii Fit: Publisher: Nintendo, Developer: Nintendo-A current sales juggernaut, this brings an exciting new way to get in shape the best way Nintendo can-charming minigames that takes your mind away from the fact that it isn't really a game.
Animal Crossing: City Folk: Publisher: Nintendo, Developer: Nintendo-While most people have accused City Folk of being phoned in, but this franchise's latest version is still peffect for anyone who missed the first two versions and anyone who doesn't need to take 40 hours to complete something. And with the inclusion of voice chat, it's a new way to get drawn into this charming city sim.
Guitar Hero: World Tour: Publisher: Activision, Developer: I really don't know or care which is better rock simulator, Rock Band 2 or GH: WT, but World Tour has this going for it: It was released on the Wii as the same time the other versions. And it's just as fun to play with some friends (or fools who only play Guitar Hero) as every other version of Guitar Hero. This version has three bonuses: a music editor, downloadable content, and best damn commerical this year:
So, there you go, the best of 2008, make sure you have these games in your collection.
