After defeating both Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, the world around the sports most coveted star and pound-for-pound king, Manny Pacquiao, could seem to get no better.
With so many positive things happening in the Pacquiao camp, there seems to be a slight conflict of sorts as well as it relates to the talented Filipino's future in the sport.
The conflicting perspectives surround his trainer, Freddie Roach, as well as advisors Wakee Salud and Michael Kuncz.
Many have noted the fact that both Arum and Roach have spoken of a potential Cotto/Pacquiao fight. Over a week ago, Freddie Roach went public with his desire to see Cotto face Pacquiao again.
Shortly after that statment, a Pacquiao advisor (Wakee Salud of Cebu) stated to the PHILIPPINE STAR that: "Pacquiao should go after Cotto because he'll come straight in, which is what Manny wants", making that a "wise fight". Salud concluded the statement by saying that "Floyd could dance the whole night and defeat Manny on points, and even if Manny wins, he may not look good doing it which could affect his chances in the Filipino congressional elections". He concluded his statement by saying "Manny should take on Cotto, beat him, run for Congress, and then face Mayweather later".
Within the last 24hrs, another Pacquiao advisor (Michael Kuncz) responded by saying to the same newspaper: "Freddie is the trainer, not the manager, so he's not involved in the process of negotiations for the selection of opponents. And who said that we [Team Pacquiao] wanted to fight Cotto? He [Manny] has never made a statement on that".
Both men are well known advisors to Manny Pacquiao, yet one of their vision doesn't quite parallel with that of the other, and maybe perhaps not even that of the fighter himself.
With so many options at his disposal, one can only imagine which way Pacquiao will go in the end.
Pacquiao is said to be looking for a fight at a weight no greater than 142lbs, but as many have noted, neither Mayweather, Cotto, or Mosley can get there. Michael Kuncz, his advisor recently stated in so many words that that isn't their problem, citing "we'll make them struggle to make the weight, not our fighter".
That sounds appealing until you realize that none of those fighters are willing to get there, and the one option that could bring a country of supporters to follow him would bring less money and have to come down from 154lbs (Chavez Jr.), which would all but guarantee a fight at 147.
That could be a real possibility, but if it does materialize, many will have to question how is it that Pacquiao will agree to face him there (147), but not Cotto, Mayweather or Mosley?
I personally don't have an answer to that million dollar question, but Pacquiao has had an answer for everything and everyone else......lets see what happens here!
