Shane Mosley has been arguably one of the top 5 talents to grace the sport over the past 15 years. Strong, fast, a chin of stone, and the determination of a wounded troop at combat are attributes that have all served him quite well over the years.

The unfortunate irony with Mosley is that as respected as he is, those qualities and attributes haven't always translated to the type of respect one would suggest next to the name of a fighter with near legendary status.

With rumors of steroids and money issues suddenly outweighing his great work of the past, a quick observation of Mosley tells us exactly how delicate it is to remain on top in a sport known to pull the curtains fast on even those categorically listed as the 'best'.

After a somewhat lackluster victory over Ricardo Mayorga, Mosley reinvented himself by going back to the drawing board with trainer Nazim Richardson, and subsequently doing what few thought he would have the ability to do at age 37 - by completely dismantling a granite-chinned Antonio Margarito that few others cared to face.

The issue for Mosley at this point is that rather than facing one of the 3 other current welterweight champs to solidify his self-proclaimed status as the welterweight divisions best, he has instead decided to wait for a lucrative showdown with either Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao - neither which appear to be too interested in making such a fight happen.

Not fighting since January 24th of this year, Mosley now finds himself nearly a full year inactive after what was arguably his best career performance and there' no signs of anything concrete pending.

A bout with WBC welterweight champion, Andre Berto could not be made. The business decision to pull out of a potential showdown with Joshua Clottey prevented that fight from happening. The only name on the radar with keen interest is one (Paul Williams) that Mosley himself has stated he has no interest in fighting.

So what next?

There are many questions surrounding Mosley, but closing in on age 38 and learning that his window of opportunity has gotten slimmer than his fight day physique, there are no questions more prominent than this one.

He has always found a way to answer his critics of the past, but as we learn so often in life, there's no better time than the present, and for Mosley, without quick answers, there may be no future.

Stay tuned.
