With winter quickly approaching, there’s really no better time than now to discuss the new fur trend sweeping Hollywood this season. Celebs of every style are starting to break out the [hopefully faux] furs, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t do the same. Though furs have been considered a symbol of luxury and elegance for centuries, they don’t have to be expensive. Faux furs, both animal-friendly and affordable, can be equally as fashionable and chic when worn the right way. This week, we’ll be exploring the fur trend for each style. But first, a few pointers that can help you out no matter how you decide to strut your stuff.
General Guidelines to Wearing Fur:
1. Keep it simple.
There is no greater advice that can bestowed upon a would-be fur wearer than to just keep it simple. You really should never wear more than one piece of fur at a time. It may be possible to get away with wearing more than one fur garment at a time if the items are small [like a small amount of fur trim around the tops of your boots and the collar of your jacket]. Should you wear something larger though [like if your jacket or boots were all fur], that item would be better worn as the only fur piece in your ensemble. The bottom line is, you don’t want to look like you’re a river bank fur trader from the 1800s. Just keep it simple, and avoid the pelt salesman look.
2. Don’t forget your accessories.
No, that doesn’t mean go extra-luxe and pour on the jewels for an over-the-top opulent look. It means that embracing the fur trend doesn’t have to mean wearing a fur coat or jacket with every outfit. Try mixing it up by wearing furry boots, a purse, headband, or even jewelry. It’s a fun, different way to wear fur without having to wear very much of it. This is especially perfect for those of you interested in trying out the fur trend, but not quite sure you can pull the look off, or how much of it you’re comfortable wearing. This way, you can just dip your toes into the trend, so to speak, and see how you like it. Though it’s a pretty safe bet that after a day full of compliments on your awesome new accessories, you’ll be ready to dive right in.
3. Stay neutral.
When it comes to wearing colors that compliment fur, neutrals tend to be best. Shades of brown, black, and white tend to make furs really pop when worn together, so use them as the main colors in your fur-centered styles. But don’t just wear all browns or shades of white. Keep from being one-dimensional by mixing your neutrals. For example, pair a brown fur vest with a long sleeve black shirt, or black fur jacket with white slacks for some great contrast. And to add a little something else to the outfit and keep it from looking drab, add in metallic tones similar to those found elsewhere in your outfit. If you’re wearing mostly browns, add a little bronze or gold to your look. If you’re wearing mostly blacks, greys, or white, add a little silver. Doing so will not only compliment the fur well, it’ll also help tie in any jewelry you might be wearing.
4. Belt it out.
Because furs are so bulky, adding a belt to your outerwear can help add a lot of shape and style to your outfit. Try to stick to larger belts that won’t get lost in the fur if you end up wearing one. A belt too small for the rest of the outfit can end up looking disastrous, so before you leave the house with one on, try walking around with it on for a minute. Reach, stretch, twist, and turn to see how your belt will react throughout the day. If at the end of your test run you notice the belt has disappeared or has caused an unsightly bulge, go without one; you’ll be better off. But if you notice it’s stayed in place for the most part and has kept you looking svelte, you’re good to go. While furs are meant to be big and warm, they aren’t meant to make you look big yourself, so be sure to test it before venturing out into the cold.
5. Layer, layer, layer.
If you’re not used to wearing fur, one thing you’ll notice immediately is how cozy and warm it will make you feel. And then, about ten minutes later, you’ll notice how much you’re sweating in it. Be sure to layer appropriately when wearing fur. Don’t bulk up too much underneath to avoid from overheating, but don’t wear something so thin that once you take your coat off indoors you’ll be freezing either. It may take a few tries to get the formula just right, but once you do, you’ll be happy you did.
Now that you’re ready to wear fur, we can explore the trend style by style. First up, the Bad Girls. But don’t worry ladies, you’ll still be able to show off plenty of that sexy lil attitude of yours while keeping warm.
