BET: Michael Jackson and James Brown perform at the 2003 BET Awards

A huge shadow will be cast over Sunday's live broadcast of the BET Awards due to the sudden death of Michael Jackson, whose music videos were a mainstay on the channel during the singer's heyday in the 80s and 90s.

The self-proclaimed King of Pop, who died Thursday after suffering cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles home, gave the network one of its more memorable moments during a surprise BET Awards '03 appearance with James Brown.

As Brown was wrapping a performance of his hit "Sex Machine," it was Jackson who strolled up behind him to place the cape on his back – surprising both the Godfather of Soul and the audience.

Before they left the stage, Brown encouraged Jackson to get on the good foot, sending the audience into hysterics. [Scroll down to watch.]

The performance clip will likely be played at some point during Sunday's 9th annual BET Awards ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on June 28 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles beginning at 8 p.m. EST.

Local talent Taraji P. Henson and Johnny Gill of Washington D.C. and R&B crooner Trey Songz of Petersburg, Va. have been tapped to make appearances, joining celebs Tyra Banks, Idris Elba, Sherri Shepherd, Anthony Anderson, Paula Patton, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Estelle, LeToya Luckett, Dr. Floyd Feelgood, Nichelle Nichols, Keke Palmer, Ray J, Snoop Dogg, Ving Rhames, Zoe Saldana and Marlon Wayans.

The performance lineup includes host Jamie Foxx, Kanye West, Beyonce, Queen Latifah, Soulja Boy, Keri Hilson, T-Pain, Mary Mary, Ne-Yo, Maxwell, Fabolous, Keyshia Cole, Monica, Young Jeezy, King of Hearts, Three of a Kind, Three the Hard Way, Travis Barker and Tyrese -- with the most anticipated performance of all coming from rap superstar Jay-Z.

Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean will be recognized with the 2009 BET Humanitarian Award, and The O'Jays will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
