Rock stars are trendsetters: they can take seemingly tacky, trashy, skimpy, or ill-fitting clothes and somehow make them work. Elle magazine recently featured a “music issue” showcasing the fierce style of Gwen Stefani, Fergie, Joan Jett, and many other female rockers.
Why? Because the rocker look is in. Metal cuffs, metal studs, zippers and other hardware, leather biker jackets, stiletto boots, and leather and lace are parading down the runways. Unfortunately, New Orleans weather won’t permit black leather for another five or six months, and few women can really imagine themselves pulling off a head-to-toe rocker look. It might work for Mardi Gras or Halloween, but not for an everyday look.
Instead, find one special rocker item and incorporate it into one of your outfits: you’ll still feel like a rock star! Check out these Michael Kors high heels on the left, available at most department stores and on Nordstrom’s website. The zipper, patent leather, and high heel scream rocker, but you can easily pair these shoes with some skinny jeans and a black top to avoid feeling “over-the-top.”

You might also try a black miniskirt from Bebe (at Lakeside mall), a studded belt over a black dress, or a studded bag like the one pictured here on the right, available at Guess for $86.50. Stores like Express and Guess feature plenty of rock star jewelry, like the charm necklace pictured below on the left – or you might try looking at Betsey Johnson’s jewelry (available at Macy’s). Wear this jewelry with dark colors - black is the ultimate rocker shade - and experiment with different fabrics or textures like lace, satin, or (when it gets cooler) leather.
Sometimes wearing a single “statement piece” and then revolving the rest of your look around that piece makes it easier to coordinate an outfit. The trick is to stay true to your own personal style but find a way to incorporate these rocker pieces into your everyday or evening look.
