On Friday, Bill Gates recieved an honorary degree from Cambridge University in England. Cambridge News Online shows a video of the ceremony, which will surely be an inspiration and call to action for all laid back Seattle business executives, as well as tech geeks everywhere.
Gates walks solemnly in line with the rest of the parade of honored participants. However, Gates is wearing an open-collared, white shirt without a tie, while the other gentlemen wear ties, some even suit coats, and blazers, etc...
For many reasons, it is fitting for Gates not to wear a tie to this traditional reception. First of all, Gates is not a traditional business executive. Actually, he dropped out of college before graduating. In addition, Gates was being honored for his humanitarian and business achievements, not his keen fashion sense or ability to fit in at a dinner party.
I applaud Gates for staying true to himself, his city and his industry by wearing comfortable, casual attire to a situation so full of pomp and circumstance.
