If you have been using Gmail for the BlackBerry, you know it has its ups and downs. Finally RIM (Research In Motion) is taking the steps to make the management of your email and thus your life, easier.
According to Engadget via BerryReview, the new Gmail plug-in is currently in beta testing and RIM is apparently calling it the “Enhanced Gmail plug-in for BlackBerry.”
To be quite honest and you will see why when we get to the features, this should just be called Gmail plug-in for BlackBerry because there is nothing enhanced about this.
It appears to be Gmail functioning how Gmail should function.
Let’s get to what has changed, and there is certainly quite a lot of good here. Maybe even enough to actually entice BlackBerry users to use Gmail on their phones.
First, you can see your emails in the Conversation View that will allow for better management via your mobile device. This is fairly crucial.
You now can add and remove labels and stars to the important stuff in your inbox that will help keep everything organized. Again, this is something that should have been available in the first place.
Tired of spam? Well, you can now use the anti-spam features that Gmail provides, from your phone. This is key if you have woke up in the middle of the night to your phone receiving a message from someone claiming you won the Nigerian lottery.
No longer.
Lastly, and this is where you should definitely pop open a bottle of champagne while reading, they have added the ability to search your Gmail inbox.
Now you probably can see why this isn’t groundbreaking, but at the very least should allow BlackBerry users to actually use Gmail the way it is supposed to be used.
There are still some things that they could work on however including lack of synchronization for some Gmail items and the inability to display HTML within emails.
For most of us (including the writer), Gmail works fine as it is on the BlackBerry, but small additions like this should definitely make the email management part of the plug-in much, much, easier.
Maybe they will have this done in time for the BlackBerry Tour, but probably not.
