Firefox should hit 1 billion downloads tomorrow.

Despite Microsoft Internet Explorer’s dominance over the browser market only a few short years ago, Mozilla’s Firefox kept pushing on. And now as they prepare to hit a huge milestone, they have closed the gap on IE’s grip on the market share.

Tomorrow, Firefox and all its incarnations will hit the 1 billion download mark. Of course, the huge number is significant, but not as important as the ground they made up on Internet Explorer. Only a few years ago, IE ruled the browser world with 90% of the market.

The numbers now?

According to Tech Crunch, Firefox has closed the gap almost hitting the 30% mark while Internet Explorer toils at 54%. That’s pretty amazing.

Mozilla has put up a webpage in honor of the milestone inviting users to put on Firefox gear (like all of us own some) and take a photo at a famous landmark or a place that makes for a great photo. If this sounds like something you want to do, you can find the website here.

They are so excited about the release, that they also have another domain setup that although not yet live, will be a place for information about the billion downloads and more.

As of this time, Firefox is at 999,218,059 downloads which means that it is being downloaded at an almost ridiculous rate of 14.3 per second. The official Firefox Counter on Twitter can be found here if you are interested in tracking the progress.

So congratulations to Firefox, very impressive.
