Sex, drugs and booze dominate the App Store.

This should not come as a surprise to anyone that has turned on a TV, been to the movie theatre or listened to music at some point in their lifetime.

Sex, drugs and violence sell.

So it’s really no shocker that two of these things, sex and drugs, along with booze, have been the big winners over at Apple’s App Store.

In a report over at Gizmodo it has become apparent that these vices have begun to completely own the app market. We’re talking three of the most downloaded applications, and they all revolve around sex, drugs and alcohol.

The number one application comes courtesy of Sports Illustrated. It’s called the Swimsuit Illustrated Swimsuit App and it basically consists of the typical swimsuit photos that are found in, wait for it, a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

It costs $3.

That is nuts.

Next on the list is a medical marijuana application called Cannabis which was extensively covered in a previous article which you can find here.

And rounding out the top three is an application called Mixologist that is a catalogue of mixed drinks for parties and booze hounds.

The Mixologist application actually is pretty practical because if you’re not a bartender, impressing guests with drinks can be a little tricky. One look at the application and you are on your way to having a great party.

It’s hard to believe that every single person that downloaded the Cannabis app is a medical marijuana user and it’s even harder to believe that Apple has left this thing for sale in the store. But hey, if you can legally obtain marijuana, the application is actually quite useful.

Onto the one that makes absolutely no sense.

While the SI Swimsuit app does a few things beyond allowing the user to peruse scantily clad women, the fact that people pay for this, to use on their iPhone, is just a little bizarre.

So now we wait until the Augmented Reality Apps come out with the release of iPhone OS 3.1 which will provide another medium for applications like these.

Practical or not.
