Barnes and Noble's announcement could doom Amazon's Kindle

Amazon: getting kicked while they are down.

Boy is Amazon in some trouble.

In the wake of last week’s news that Amazon removed copies of George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ and ‘Ninteen Eighty-Four’ both from its website and from Kindle users who had already purchased copies, Barnes and Noble made a huge announcement that potentially could send Amazon reeling even further.

More than a few of you voiced your displeasure with the company’s actions; a few of you even said that you were going to sell your Kindle because of what happened and several people stated that they had virtually lost faith in eReader’s and ebooks as a whole.

Well, Barnes and Noble, with impeccable timing, came to restore that faith with a huge announcement.

Let’s sum it up a little bit, shall we?

Barnes and Noble announced the launch of its online eBookstore and an exclusive partnership with the upcoming Plastic Logic eReader device that should be out in early 2010.

Ok, that doesn’t sound like much, but wait, there’s more.

In addition to providing ebooks for the Plastic Logic device, it will also allow customers to read them on several popular devices including the iPhone, the iPod Touch, BlackBerry phones, and laptops and PC’s using OS X and Windows.

It will also include more than a half-million, yes, a half million, public domain books through Google which are of course, free. The eBookstore itself will feature more than 700,000 titles for purchase with new releases and best sellers at the reasonable price of $9.99.

And plenty more which you can find in the press release.

So, there is hope here people.

You also have to think that Barnes and Noble saw the outrage sparked by Amazon deleting ebooks that customers “owned” and will go to lengths to make sure that won’t happen.

That might make or break this announcement.

Also, if the anticipated Plastic Logic eReader is anywhere on the level of the Kindles in quality with a reasonable price; Barnes and Noble might really dish Amazon a painful, painful blow.

Maybe a knockout.
