For Pre users, applications have been a waiting game.

In the application world of Palm’s Pre there have been nothing but shortcomings, included the lack of a sanctioned SDK release and minimal applications available upon its release.

Today is no different.

Those of you who read the news over the weekend about Palm’s Mojo SDK being leaked in beta form may have hoped this was a sign of good things to come. While it is too early to tell whether today’s release of Palm’s webOS 1.0.4 will impact the leak, users who downloaded non-sanctioned applications without a jailbreak are going to run into some problems.

According to a report by Engadget, the firmware has been released to stymie security loop holes that were found in the operating system. Yes, getting security updates on hardware are usually a good thing but sadly, for the application lacking Pre that might not be the case here.

With a lack of apps available, many Pre users have turned to getting them through sources other than Palm. If you have used a jailbreak on your phone, the firmware will not have any impact whatsoever. If you haven’t used a jailbreak and you have installed these applications, they will continue to work.

So, what’s the problem?

The problem here is that if you didn’t jailbreak you won’t be able to download any more of these applications.

As Engadget noted, many users were installing applications through email which is highly dangerous. The firmware blocks this, so if you were one of those risk takers, this could be for your own good.

From the looks of things, it appears like Pre users are just going to have to wait, wait, and wait for their applications, many potentially going bald in the process.
