Washington isn't known for its killer hills.
That's too bad, considering runners can increase leg strength, plus aerobic and anaerobic capacity, by adding hills to their workouts. But running groups throughout the metropolitan area know where to find hills that will eat your quads alive, and now, you will, too. Here's a list of just a few of the metro area's toughest hill workouts:
Grubb Road out-and-back: This favorite of the Pacers Silver Spring Fun Run group features several leg-burners through the gorgeous Colonial Village neighborhood near Rock Creek Park. Runners looking to add miles can hop into the park for even more hills, such as those on the Beach Loop.
The National Half Marathon route offers a long, steep climb dubbed "the Kalorama Climb" through downtown Washington.
The Woodland-Highland-Sligo Creek Trail 10-miler is a longer version of another standard Pacers Silver Spring Fun Run route. The roughly four flat miles on Sligo Creek Trail give runners a much-needed break from the hill loop through northern Silver Spring.
Runners training for the Boston Marathon swear by the Mormon Temple hill, shown between miles 11 and 13 on this map. Loop around a three or four times, and you're almost certain to want to spend the rest of the day in a comfortable chair.
