Chris Rolph and his long time buddy Jon Owens have had a running contest for some time now. And that contest is to see who can catch the biggest Catfish. Chris says that they have been Buddy's since the First Grade.
In the photo to the right, Chris poses with his 96 pound Blue Catfish which he caught in the Ohio River near downtown Cincinnati on June 11, 2009. (See Slide Show at bottom of page)
The huge Blue Cat somehow got the nickname of "Moby" and now resides in Chris' personal pond with dozens of other sizable Catfish. However, Moby is the "King of the pond. The others are smaller, ranging in the 20 to 30 pound range, but still sizable fish!
Chris and Jon were fishing that evening from a boat using small "Skipack" (a small Herring) for bait. The photos included in the "Slide Show" on this page will give you an even better idea of just how large this Blue Cat really is.
Most people would never think that such a lunker would be, or could be caught in the Ohio River near downtown Cincinnati. It's just not the place one would think lunker Catfish lurk. However, this is not the first large Blue Cat that Chris has ever caught in the Ohio. Smaller Catfish in the 20 to 30 pound range are fairly common he said in a phone interview.
Chris' trophy is 54.5 inches in length with a 36 inch girth and will go into the record books as the largest Blue Catfish on record for Ohio. All that needs to be done is the certification which is in the process of being completed by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee. It replaces the first ever state record Blue Catfish certified in 2008 of 57 pounds 3.2 ounces.
A larger one next trip Chris?
