Balmain Fall '09 as seen at Style.com

Tough and sexy, zipper embellishments rev up your gear to full throttle with their metallic teeth adding shine and texture to clothing and accessories. Teetering on giving off dangerous fetish style vibes, zippers give a girl an edge.

Embellishments these days appear to be more important than the actual shape and style of the pieces they are decorating. Both Spring and Fall ’09 designer lines have been rife with trims taking center stage. Large jewels discreetly edge collars or they sprawl across whole chests unabated. As we’ve seen, built-in fringe and chains turn ordinary tees into something wickedly luxe. Pearls and lace trims are a ladylike alternative. We all know that biker studs are taking over the world.Tassels are getting fatter and more intricate every day. Louis Vuitton designer Marc Jacobs must be raiding the Tinker toy box for the primary hued wooden beads and blocks her uses in lieu of conventional tassels to decorate his latest bags.

But there is something especially alluring about a line of ruffles winding around a dress in a graceful fashion when it is capped off with a silvery zippered trim. The juxtaposition of the girlie ruffles with industrial hard edged metal is surprisingly sophisticated. Designers have used chunky zippers in a random way as well – placing them haphazardly as a graphic statement to great effect. And always the mystery remains. When you unzip it, what lies underneath?
