For Bay Area/Central Coast boxing enthusiasts, the most important fight this weekend is taking place in Toluca, Mexico, as Carina Moreno defends her women’s WBC 105-pound title against Anabel Ortiz.

For Moreno (21-1, 6 knockouts), it’s her first fight in Mexico and her first fight anywhere in eight months, as two others have fallen through.

Moreno, who is based in Watsonville, between Santa Cruz and Monterey, has noticed greater enthusiasm in Mexico than here for women’s boxing, which seems surprising, but that may be a reflection on the lack of competition here. Her handler Rick Noble told the Salinas Californian that the pay is better in Mexico, too. Go figure.

Moreno is one of those still-waters-run-deep people. She seems like the gentlest soul in the world until the bell rings.

It’s a nice time of year in Central Mexico. Being there Saturday would sure beat serving trick-or-treaters here. Viva, Carina.

AGBEKO FIGHTS ON SHOWTIME: Joseph Agbeko (27-1, 22 knockouts) defends the IBF bantamweight title, which he won by easily outpointing Vic Darchinyan last July, against Yohhny Perez (19-0, 14 knockouts) Saturday on ShoBox. Darchinyan, by the way, will go back to 115 pounds for a tuneup bout Dec. 12 against Tomas Rojas.

POLISH SUPREMACY: I still think once-beaten cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek is a one-dimensional fighter, but he took on the greater dimensions of a heavyweight last weekend to dominate Andrew Golota (41-8-1), stopping the 41-year-old former contender in the fifth round in Lodz, Poland after flooring him in the first. Adamek weighed 214 but reportedly will return to 200, the cruiserweight limit these days.

McCALL EDGES WHITAKER: Speaking of washed-up heavyweights, 44-year-old Oliver McCall won a unanimous decision over Lance Whitaker on Oct. 10, winning by one point on each scorecard. McCall, best known for handing Lennox Lewis his first defeat, but then turning psychotic and bursting into tears as he lost a rematch to Lewis, has fought three times this year.

TY BARNETT LOSES: Ty Barnett, who won a main event in San Jose at a Fight Night at the Tank in September 2008 as a junior welterweight, was unbeaten until Oct. 10, when he suffered a first-round defeat to Juan Santiago in Salisbury, Md. It probably didn’t help that the bout was staged at lightweight, where Barnett, an honest 5-foot-10, doesn’t belong.
