It was reported yesterday that actress, Natasha Richardson suffered a traumatic brain injury after falling while skiing. Reports of her injuries have been more speculative than substantiated. It is known that she was released from the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal, today and flown to New York where she and husband ( actor Liam Neeson) and their two sons live. Liam Neeson accompanied her on the private flight with a medical team. It might be presumed that she and her family would prefer that her treatment be provided where they reside.
This article in the Toronto Star reported that Richardson was taking a ski lesson when she fell. She was on a beginner slope and did not appear to have sustained any injuries. As a precaution, the ski patrol was called to assess her injuries. Nothing was apparent at the time, but later she complained of headaches and was taken to the hospital where she was admitted.
Traditionally skiing has not been a sport that people typically associate with helmets. It may be because they do not find them necessary, or they find helmets to be uncomfortable or unfashionable. Now that there is more awareness of the danger of head injury, it might be advisable to explore safety options.
