Only last week, we were forced to see pictures of Padre Alberto Cutie all over the trashy magazines in the checkout line at the grocery, - see my article about Father Cutie HERE .
This week, it's Mel Gibson's turn to be the star of the sleazy tabloid rack. Now we must endure another famously Catholic celebrity, suddenly enmeshed in a sex scandal. Instead of being treated to silly comparisons of the love story from 'The Thorn Birds,' we are now going to suffer through a lot of jokes about Mel's 'passion' or the 'passion of Mel.'
During the filming of his extraordinarily bloody, hugely successful and somewhat anti-semitic movie, 'The Passion of Christ,' Mel Gibson famously said, 'The Holy Ghost was working through me on this film, and I was just directing traffic. I hope the film has the power to evangelize.'
Gibson is now doing another kind of preaching. Since he has been caught cheating on his wife Robyn, the mother of his seven children, with a 39 year old Russian woman, he is now, officially, getting divorced. Meanwhile, the younger woman is reportedly pregnant with Gibson's child.
Coming only a few years after his famous drunk driving arrest and notorious rant against Jews, one has to wonder if Gibson isn't feeling a little embarrassed about all of his preachy, pro-Catholic talk in public. You can stop wondering. It seems that Mel, like Padre Alberto, is not embarrassed at all, and things would be fine, if only we would all just respect his privacy. No apology, no acknowledgment of shame about his hypocrisy, no nothing.
Gibson attends a 'conservative' Catholic chapel that he paid to have built, and he also owns the land on which it sits. He has long been vocal about the fact that he considers the official Catholic church to be too liberal. At Gibson's Chapel, the priests still say mass in Latin, with their backs to the congregation. Women parishioners must cover their hair, wear long skirts, blouses and flat shoes. Gibson's church is the Catholic Church frozen in a time before the modernization program of Vatican II in the 1960s.
Britain's The Daily mail quoted a source at Mel's church as saying that Gibson recently got up on the altar and got cranky with the rest of the congregation for what he perceived as their gossiping about his relationship with his Russian mistress. The source claims that, 'It was a crazed rant. He paced back and forth, furiously telling the congregation including two priests and a visiting bishop, that he would not stand by and be judged and scrutinized.' Then Gibson threatened to shut down the church. You can read more about that here:
Mel Gibson's Church rant
In my article about Padre Alberto Cutie, I asked two main questions:
Did he and his mistress use birth control? and
Where's the remorse?
Now that Mr.-Holy-Spirit-Mel has decided to go on Jay Leno and joke about fathering a child with his mistress, while still married to his wife, I have two more questions.
Is Mel going to marry a woman that he trusts so little that he has asked for a paternity test to determine her baby's father? and
Where's the remorse?
I am not judging these men for their sexual misconduct. I just want to know if they realize that they judged others harshly, that they spouted off about what is right and wrong, and now they want to be spared the same treatment. If there is any lesson in what happened to them, wouldn't that lesson have something to do with humility? Maybe God is sending them a very personal message. The official Catholic Church dodged the bullet on this one. Mel's defection was one of their luckiest losses!
