The world does not operate in black and white, therefore, the views of an extremist will not prevail.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, (PETA), think they have the solution to the dog fighting problem. According to PETA, a ban should be placed on breeding and owning Pit Bulls all together, with the exception of the one's currently living in “good homes”. So basically, the Pit Bulls in “good homes” get to live out their lives while all others are euthanized and no more are bred, ultimately leading to the extinction of the breed.. Wipe out the breed, wipe out the problem. Well, I am certain if you wipe out the human race you will wipe out child starvation too, so who's on board for that cause?
What extremists such as PETA's president Ingrid Newkirk, (who reportedly still has issues from being bitten by a Pit as a child) are failing to recognize is that fighters will simply choose another breed. Do we eradicate the next breed as well until one by one we drive canines to extinction? Then we can kill off all of the roosters and wipe out cock fighting too.
An advocate for PETA's breed ban listed as “Spiderman”, comments against human discrimination in a recent PETA chat forum, yet agrees with breed discrimination. I find selective discrimination to be just as wrong and hypocritical if nothing less. This commenter also remarks about owners of “fighting breeds” making up for something the Wizard of Oz never gave them. As I chuckled at his immature response, I felt sad for him at the same time for his terrible lack of education. These “fighting breeds” are also tremendously successful search and rescue dogs, therapy dogs, weight pulling competitors, and agility competitors.
PETA has been under fire for their alarming euthanasia rate. In 2006, they reported killing 2,981 animals while only adopting out 12. This is the same group that believes eliminating the breed will eliminate the suffering. For example, they wanted all of the dogs from the Michael Vick case euthanized, as they basically stated the dogs would continue to suffer and never lead normal lives; (see Sports Illustrated, Vick's Dogs). I encourage you to visit the National Geographic Channel and see the Vick Dogs now; then develop your own opinion as to whether you think these dogs are suffering.
