How does a book, written in 1971, go from being ranked 54,295 on Saturday, April 18, 2009, as reported by the Washington Post, to #2 on Amazon's Top 100 book list on Sunday, April 19, 2009? Simple. No problem. It just has to be presented as an extremely high profile gift.
That's exactly what happened to Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent, written by Eduardo Galeano in 1971. Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, presented this *not so well known book to President Obama. They were attending the 5th Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The cameras were rolling at just the right moment. Soon, the whole world knew about the gift and its title.
That's the short story of how it happened. At #2, Open Veins of Latin America is ahead of Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4) which is pretty amazing in itself. Could it be #1 by tomorrow? If you want to check it out, see Amazon's Top 100 list.
*4-20-2009: I should have added "in the United States."
