New York, NY: Early on Friday, comiXology announced that Marvel Comics are now available on their Comics by comiXology iPhone application.
Comics started appearing for the iPhone shortly after Apple opened the iTunes App Store late last year, and the past few months have seen a flurry of activity, with at least three applications released since July that function as comic stores.
However, the “big two” publishers of comics, DC and Marvel, who collectively own about 80% of the print market for comics, had so far stayed on the sidelines. With Marvel’s entry into the market, that barrier is broken.
DC recently removed Paul Levitz as President and Publisher, who seemed reluctant to enter the digital comic market. Replacing Mr. Levitz was Diane Nelson who previously ran Warner Premiere, and seems to be a leadership choice that would lead to digital distribution of comics.
Comics by comiXology released 71 Marvel comics, including Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s run on Astonishing X-Men, Robert Kirkman’s Marvel Zombies, and Ed Brubaker’s Captain America, among others.
