The 14 remaining contestants performed last night in hopes of making it one step closer to the top 10 dancers.
Tonight's show started out with an interesting Tice DiOrio routine based on a painting coming to life. Then they got right into the results
The first two couples results: Randi and Evan and Karla and Vitolio were brought out first with the revelation that one of them was safe and one was in the bottom three. Karla and Vitolio had gotten great comments for their quick step while Randi and Evan got just OK comments about their broadway performance. If the audience were to follow the judges, Randi and Evan would be in the bottom three... but the audience doesn't always listen to the judges comments! Tonight Randi and Evan were saved putting Karla and Vitolio in the bottom three couples.
The next three couples results: Janette and Brandon came out next with Kayla and Kupono and Melissa and Ade. Of these, one couple would be in the bottom three. Janette and Brandon heard great things about their Cha Cha, even from Mia who previously disliked Brandon. They were declared safe, leaving the other two couples to wait it out. Kayla and Kupono were said to be reaching their true potential on this show, while Melissa and Ade excited the judges with their ballet routine. With both having great comments, it was really hard to say who would be sent to the bottom three. It all comes down to audience preferences in this one since both couples did well. It turned out the audience was more impressed with the classical ballet than the contemporary as Kayla and Kupono were put in the bottom three.
The final two couples results: Phillip and Jeanine and Caitlin and Jason were the last two couples to hear their fate. Phillip and Jeanine had heard rave reviews about their hip-hop routine while Caitlin and Jason had mixed reviews. Would the audience listen to the judges this time? One thing Phillip and Jeanine had going for them was the popular song by Kanye West they were dancing too which could have helped. Unfortunately for them, the song and rave comments from the judges didn't save them as Phillip and Jeanine were the last couple to be put in the bottom three.
Solos: Dance for your Life! With such great couples in the bottom three, the judges were looking forward to seeing some fantastic solos. In the past few weeks, there have been some disappointing solos and the judges don't seem like they are going to put up with sub-par solos anymore. Karla came out first to show her contemporary style and seemed to have a thought out performance to go while with the song she was dancing to. Vitolio had his own contemporary performance next and did a few cool things but overall nothing special. He seemed a bit cocky afterward which is usually not a good thing.
Kayla also had a contemporary routine, geez there were a lot of contemporary dancers this season. Her performance seemed like a lot of lines and not a lot of content though. Kupono was next with a ... you guessed it... contemporary routine. His routine seemed to have more choreography to it than the two previous dancers which might help him in the end.
Jeanine was the girl we were most looking forward to since we haven't seen her contemporary since the top 20 started. She had an interesting twist on her performance which hopefully would impress the judges. Finally, Phillip was the one the judges couldn't wait to see as his hip-hop has already blown them away in the past. He came right out with a strong routine full of tricks and fast moves, trying to show all he can do as well as entertain. Most would be surprised if he was sent home.
Guest Performer: Kelly Clarkson: While the judges deliberated, another Fox star came on - the original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, performed I Do Not Hook Up.
14 Become 12: When it came to the girls, the judges were unanimous. Jeanine was called forward first and Nigel said she "without question was the strongest solo of the evening and brilliant". Kayla was one of the choreographers favorites, but they thought her solo was "static" and just full of kicks. Karla was a very good dancer, but the judges think she hasn't gotten to the "star quality" that she had at the beginning so they decided to send her home saving Kayla for another week.
As for the boys, the judges were unanimous. Nigel told Phillip he was unique and phenomenal but he still has a lot of hard work to do. They thought his solo was a bit desperate and over-packed. With that said, they sent him off the stage as safe. Vitolio had great presence but they don't think he delivers much. Kupono had a weak solo, so I guess I was wrong about that, but they saved him because they must have decided he had more potential than Vitolio who was sent home.
