
Of all of his choices to fill staff positions, Barack Obama's choice of Official White House photographer will probably be on of the least controversial. Ohio University photojournalism professor Pete Souza, a former Chicago Tribune photographer (Washington Bureau), will be chronicling Obama's presidency with photos. He was the Official White House Photographer for President Reagan.
Souza's career as a freelancer includes work for National Geographic and for Life Magazine, he was one the first photojournalists to cover the fall of Kabul in Afganistan after 9/11 and has had photographs on the covers of Fortune, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report. He has pubished two books chronicling his time with Reagan. In an introduction to the latest one, Former Sen. Howard Baker Jr. said that Souza captured "some of the most intimate, honest and humanizing scenes of the presidency I've ever seen."
Among the photojournalism awards Souza has won are the Pictures of the Year annual competition, the NPPA's Best of Photojournalism, and the White House News Photographers Association's yearly photography contest.
Souza's latest book was published in July 2008. The book, "The Rise of Barack Obama," includes exclusive photographs of the Obama's political life. During Obama's first year in the Senate, Souza documented him extensively and also accompanied Obama to seven countries.
